The Oresteia - MYTH OR REALITY? |
It´s surprising how Greek mythology can be related with the reality we face today, robberies, murders, betrayals, I think they are events that have always been here even before our existence. Now, the question is: Could Greek stories inspire us to commit the actions we take today? Who created this?
In this time, we will take a look to ´´Oresteia´´, the trilogy created by the Greek dramatist Aeschylus on 458 BCE. This amazing story talks about the house of Atreus in three different parts: Agamemnon, The Libation Beaters and The Eumenides, where different events happen such as murder, treason, love and madness, but in this opportunity, I would like to talk about one of the main characters who gives life to the story. Yes, I’m talking about Clytemnestra. And if you have never read about her before, please keep reading….
Clytemnestra
Who is Clymtemnestra? Well, the daughter of the King of Sparta (Tyndareus) and sister of Helena. She met Agamemnon in Sparta and became his wife, from that marriage she had four children: Orestes, her son and three daughters: Iphigeneia, Electra and Chrysothemis.
As time passes, Agamemnon receives the opportunity to recover his father's kingdom, from which he sailed along with 100 other ships to fight in the war against Troy. He took with him his daughter Iphigeneia and start his trip to Troy. However, he saw that he couldn’t move forward due to his offense to the goddess Artemis. At that point, he decided to sacrifices his daughter Iphigeneia to forgive his offense. He went to the war and return victorious.
While Agamemnon is at war Clymtemnestra started a romance with Aegysthus, with which he plans and murders Agamemnon. First as revenge for the death of her daughter and for her love to Aegysthus. Having eliminated Agamemnon made Clymtemnestra the new governor of Argos with Aegystus.
Over the pass of the years, Orestes and Electra grow up with hate and thirst of revenge, from which they kill their mother Clymtemnestra and Aegysthus.
Clymtemnestra represents the life of a lot of women who feels alone, wounded and battered by the ego of their husbands, where power is more important than love. But when they face with these situations, they are forced to seek love anywhere or even kill to obtained revenge and be happy. But now think, would you do the same as Clymtemnestra?
